Barry Harrell, 40, has been named business editor of the Austin American-Statesman, interim editor Debbie Hiott announced Friday.

A story on the paper’s website states, “Harrell, who has been an assistant news editor and business reporter since joining the Statesman staff in 2007, has been serving as interim business editor since Kathy Warbelow retired as business editor in June.

“‘I’ve often said that the new economy is one of the best stories in the world, and Austin is a terrific vantage point for covering it,’ Harrell said.

“Harrell came to Texas and the Statesman from the St. Petersburg Times, where he served for seven years as a senior copy editor and national wires editor. He previously worked for newspapers in Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama and Florida.

“At the Statesman, Harrell first served as assistant news editor, sharing management responsibility for a staff of about 20 news design and copy editors and for content decisions for Page One and other news section fronts. In 2010, he moved to the business staff to report and write on a wide range of local businesses, events and issues.”
