SmartMoney.com editor Tom Weber is leaving the personal finance publication in the wake of Dow Jones & Co.‘s acquisition of the 50 percent it didn’t already own.

In an e-mail to the staff obtained by Talking Biz News, Weber wrote, “I’m writing to let you know that I’ve decided to leave SmartMoney.com. This has been a fantastic place to work, thanks largely to all of your efforts. And I?m extremely proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish under challenging conditions. The site’s recent General Excellence award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers is only the latest testament to the fine journalism you’ve worked so hard at.

“With the purchase by Dow Jones, the future at SmartMoney.com has never looked brighter. But it also means there will be a different set of challenges ahead, and that makes this an appropriate point for me to move on.

“I want to particularly thank Jonathan for being such a tremendous boss and mentor here at SmartMoney, and especially for being open to experimenting with new features on the site even in a tough environment.

“I’m looking forward to watching SmartMoney.com continue to evolve in the future. Please keep in touch.”

Weber also is teaching digital journalism at Princeton University, where he’s a Ferris Professor of Journalism this spring.
