Ryan Salchert has been hired by the San Antonio Business Journal as its real estate and retail reporter.

Salchert writes, “I understand I’ve been left with big shoes to fill after this beat’s former reporter, Katie Burke, departed for more temperate pastures in San Francisco. However, Katie has been a great help to me in these last couple of weeks informing me about what to expect on this beat, and I greatly appreciate her assistance.

“To tell you all a little about myself, I grew up in the suburbs of Raleigh, North Carolina, where I would go on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which may be known by its more current nickname, the University of National Champions. While at UNC, I worked as a reporter and assistant editor at the independent student-run paper, The Daily Tar Heel, and graduated with a degree in communications and business journalism.

“In January, I moved up to New Jersey, where I worked for Forbes as a wealth team intern, helping the magazine write, research and compile bios for its annual World Billionaires List. My brief stint with Forbes taught me an incredible amount about newsgathering, reporting and researching, all of which I hope to bring to my post at the San Antonio Business Journal.

“Before yesterday afternoon, I had never been to San Antonio, and everything about this city and Texas in general feels new and exciting. I believe this naivety gives me a unique perspective when covering this city, as I come into this position without prior stereotypes, perceptions or judgments.”
