Paul Thomasch, the U.S. editor for general news for Reuters, sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:

I am pleased to announce that Mark Guarino has joined U.S. General News as a correspondent, based in his hometown of Chicago. Previously a national correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor, Mark has covered everything from the Gulf oil spill to the Keystone pipeline, the Detroit bankruptcy and, of course, crime and politics.  His byline in covering national news and culture has run in The Washington Post, The Guardian, Al Jazeera America, The Chicago Tribune and Salon, among many other outlets.  Many of you will be familiar with his freelance work for us in the past.

Mark, whose first book is due from the University of Chicago Press in late 2016, has rubbed elbows and interviewed countless artists and musicians as a writer and critic, including Keith Richards and Jack White (he even hung out with late Studs Terkel on the author and historian’s 90th birthday).

Mark will be a terrific addition to our Midwest team. He takes up his new post on December 1.

Please join me in welcoming him aboard!
