Bob Goldsborough writes for the Chicago Tribune about Reuters reporter Debra Sherman, who died in April from cancer.
Goldsborough writes, “In 1992, Ms. Sherman shifted to Bloomberg News and continued to cover Chicago’s financial markets. Two years later, she joined Reuters, where she covered general corporate news and the U.S. derivative markets.
“She transferred to Reuters’ London bureau in 1996, covering the stock market in the United Kingdom for two years before returning to Chicago.
“;She was this rare combination of being very serious about her work but at the same time not taking herself or life too seriously,’ said former Reuters Chicago bureau chief Janie Gabbett, who hired Ms. Sherman. ‘And she loved her work. She would get truly excited about a story, and with her infectious personality, she would make everybody else excited about it as well.’
“For much of her time at Reuters, Ms. Sherman covered large medical device manufacturers like Boston Scientific and Medtronic.
“‘She did not suffer fools lightly, and she was not afraid to go toe to toe with the CEO if there was something they needed to be called on,’ said colleague Bill Berkrot. ‘She was a very tenacious reporter and a tough cookie.’
“‘These executives would call her because they knew her stories could make or break their companies,’ he said.”
