Sarah Slobin2Quartz executive editor Zach Seward sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:

We are excited to announce that Sarah Slobin will be joining us as Things editor, overseeing the newsroom team in charge of data-driven, visual, and otherwise creative journalism. She’ll start on May 2 and report to me.

Sarah brings to us deep and award-winning experience as a graphics editor at the New York Times, Fortune, and the Wall Street Journal, where she was most recently the visuals editor for the Money and Investing section. Many of us have had the pleasure of working with her at those news organizations; some of my favorite moments at the Journal were collaborations with Sarah. I’m really thrilled to be working with her again.

The Things team has been a defining part of Quartz since day one, pushing themselves and the rest of the newsroom to rethink what journalism can be when it’s on the internet. (Thus, the word “things” and not articles or even graphics.) David, Nikhil, Keith, and Chris have risen to that challenge and taken Things well beyond what I could have ever imagined or reasonably hoped for. It’s long past time that they have an editor who can give the team her undivided attention.

Sarah is perfect for the role because she shares our goal of pushing on the boundaries of what business journalism can be. Her perspective on visual storytelling influenced how we first approached it here at Quartz, and now we can bring things full circle by officially welcoming her to our newsroom.
