Prashant RaoPrashant Rao has been hired as deputy business editor for Europe for The New York Times.

He will start next month and will be based in London. He replaces Patrick Scott, who left in August.

For the past year, Rao has been an editor in Hong Kong for Agence France-Presse. He previously was the Baghdad bureau chief for the news agency.

In a post on Facebook, Rao wrote:

The last 10 years at AFP have been enormously rewarding, and I am incredibly grateful to the countless people at the agency who have supported, encouraged and guided me. In particular, giving me the opportunity to cover Iraq, and eventually lead the bureau there, is an honour I will never forget. I can only hope I have given a fraction as much to the agency as it has to me.

The opportunity to work at the New York Times, though, is one I could not pass up.

Rao is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Political Science. He previously worked at Bloomberg News.
