TALKING BIZ NEWS EXCLUSIVE

Wall Street Journal managing editor Robert Thomson sent out the following e-mail to the staff on Monday afternoon:

“I am delighted to announce that Stephen Fidler has become Brussels Editor for Dow Jones Newswires and The Wall Street Journal. Putting Steve in charge of an integrated bureau is part of the continued strengthening of our reporting from the world’s business and political capitals. He will lead a combined team of reporters providing our readers with news and analysis about the European Union, which is at the heart of the debate over trade and financial regulation, in addition to covering NATO and the broader region.

“Steve is uniquely qualified for this role, given his intimate knowledge of finance, global affairs, regulation, and things Belgian. For the past seven months, Steve has served in London as European Finance Editor for the Journal. Prior to that, Steve worked for 20 years at the Financial Times in a range of posts that included stints as U.S. diplomatic editor, Latin America editor, capital markets editor, and defense and security editor. Earlier in his career, Steve was a correspondent for Reuters in London, New York and Bahrain. He will report to Marcus Wright and Nik Deogun.”
