Robert Perino was named Wednesday as the new art director of Fortune magazine. Perino is currently the art director at Field & Stream and will begin his new duties at Fortune in August.
Perino is a key part of the Field & Stream editorial team that garnered three National Magazine nominations this year. Before joining Field & Stream, Perino was art director at New York Magazine; he has also held that position at National Geographic Adventure and Men’s Journal. At each of these titles, Perino elevated and refined the look of the magazine. His work has been recognized by American Photography, American Illustration, the Society of Publication Designers, Communication Arts, and the Society of Illustrators.
A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, Perino lives in Malverne, N.Y. with his wife and three children.
Fortune has a history of having some of the best designs and art work in the magazine work. When it was founded in 1930, the covers could contain striking art from some of the country’s leading artists. The fist cover was sketched on a tablecloth in a speakeasy in lower Manhattan by Thomas Maitland Cleland, at the time one of the country’s leading experts on typefaces and design.
The photography inside would be the best in the world. Margaret Bourke-White, who later became a famous photographer, was the first staff photographer for Fortune.
