The National Association of Black Journalists is offering a two-day seminar on business journalism later this month at Bloomberg News headquarters in New York. The seminar will be held on May 19-20, and the deadline to register is May 17.
The seminar included sessions on precision in writing, writing with numbers, business reporting on the radio, writing about the stock market, reporting on your local economy and financial news on television.
Among the speakers is Amanda Bennett, executive editor/enterprise for Bloomberg News. She was editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer from June, 2003, to November, 2006, and prior to that was editor of the Herald-Leader in Lexington, Kentucky. She also served for three years as managing editor/projects for The Oregonian in Portland.
Bennett served as a Wall Street Journal reporter for more than 20 years. A cum laude graduate of Harvard College, she held numerous posts at the paper, including auto industry reporter in Detroit in the late 70s and early 80s, Pentagon and State Department reporter, Beijing correspondent, management editor/reporter, national economics correspondent and, finally, chief of the Atlanta bureau until 1998, when she moved to The Oregonian.
Also speaking is Galen Meyer, the team leader in charge of training the 2,200 employees in Bloomberg’s print, television and radio news operations worldwide.
Meyer and his team of 10 trainers work with editors and reporters to improve their stories, to better understand the markets and finance, and to use the Bloomberg terminal. Since joining Bloomberg in 1994, Meyer has headed coverage for a variety of topics, including retailing, consumer goods, media, energy, insurance and real estate. Before Bloomberg, he was one of the Business section editors at the Tampa Tribune in Florida and worked at the Dubuque Telegraph Herald in Iowa.
