Tara Murphy, who had been named managing editor of TheStreet.com earlier this year, has been promoted to editor in chief.

The previous editor in chief, Jeffrey Kanige, lasted in the role less than a year and was laid off earlier this fall.

In this expanded role, Murphy will lead editorial operations for the company’s portfolio of institutional and consumer finance brands and oversee the newsroom’s global expansion as well as mobile, video and social strategies.

“In just a few months, Tara has combined three disparate newsrooms into a single 24-7 digital powerhouse, with reporters in EuropeAsia and across the U.S.,” said David Callaway, CEO of TheStreet, in a statement. “She is a transformational editor coming to us at just the right time as we combine our news products into an elite financial news and data journalism operation.”

Murphy will report to Callaway.

Prior to joining TheStreet, Murphy was the president of KATYA Inc., an online women’s apparel company. She had previously served as director of business development at Hearst Digital Media as well as managing editor of Cosmopolitan.com.

Before Hearst, she spent six years at Forbes, where she served as senior anchor of the Forbes.com Video Network. Murphy was formerly a staff reporter at TheStreet.com, and she began her professional career in U.S. institutional equity sales at Merrill Lynch in New York.
