I regret to announce that Douwe Miedema is leaving Reuters at the end of July to return to Europe. He will take up a position as a spokesman and speechwriter for the European Stability Mechanism, the Luxembourg-based fund that lends money to euro zone countries in financial difficulty. Douwe joined Reuters in Amsterdam in 2000 and moved to Frankfurt the following year to cover the European Central Bank.

He also had a stint in Zurich, and headed the M&A and investment banking team in London, before coming to D.C. in 2012 to cover financial regulation. In his current role, he broke news about Federal Reserve’s plans to subject insurers to a tighter regulatory regime and the industry’s efforts to resist it. In joining the public sector, Douwe is returning to familiar territory. Before coming to Reuters, Douwe worked in the communications department at the Dutch central bank, where he was the editor of the staff magazine, amongst others.

Douwe’s last day in the office is July 31, and we will plan to send him off with goodbye drinks on Thursday July 30, at Woodward Table starting around 5:30 pm. Look forward to seeing you there.

Douwe headed up the financial services team in London of 20 journalists, covering M&A, IPOs, restructuring, banking, real estate, investment management, hedge funds and private equity.
