Improving business coverage

Josh Awtry, the executive editor of The Coloradoan in Fort Collins, writes about how the paper is looking to improve its coverage of business-related topics.

Awtry writes, “Environment and smart growth: Northern Coloradans sit squarely at the junction of ‘keep our land pristine,’ and ‘drill, baby, drill.’ Walking that tightrope between a fragile ecosystem and critical economic development is difficult, and something we’re beginning to keep better tabs on. We’ve expanded Bobby Magill‘s hours so he can spend more time on the environment and the energy industry; he’ll also be aided by Patrick Malone, who will focus on growth and urban development….

“Innovators and entrepreneurs: Whether you’re talking independent coffee shops or global headquarters located here, Fort Collins is home to a fiercely creative business acumen. More than just expanded business coverage, reporter David Young is going to drill down into what makes our local trades so special.

“Regional beer coverage: Like it or not (and I hear from many in both camps), Northern Colorado is becoming known around the nation for its craft brewers. It’s not only part of the city’s culture, but it’s a huge economic driver as well. Coverage of beer was the newspaper’s first true ‘passion topic’ experiment, started nearly a year ago. Now you can see how it fits into our overall portfolio. Our goal is to cover the other passion topics as intensely as David Young has covered this one.”
