How Liz Weston got started in personal finance journalism

Personal finance columnist Liz Weston, whose column appears on MSN Money and in papers across the country, answers questions in her latest column about how she got started in her career.

Here is an excerpt:

1 How did you get started in writing about personal finance?

I’d been a journalist for a while, covering a variety of different beats including features and politics. It was that last beat that made me decide I needed a change; I was pretty sick of politicians and wanted to write about something that had more of an immediate impact on people’s lives.

The business section had an open position covering banking and personal finance, so I thought I’d try that. Pretty quickly I realized I was in over my head with the personal finance part, so I started the Certified Financial Planner training course, going to school at night.

2 How has your business changed?

The Internet has helped people gain access to so much information, which really is a mixed bag. On the one hand, you can learn about virtually any topic. On the other, a lot of the information you get is just flat wrong.
