Fox Biz Network's Casone on her career

Fox Business Network anchor Cheryl Casone talked to Gianni Celestin of Examiner.com about her career as a business journalist.

Here is an excerpt:

What are some of the biggest challenges (personal and professional) you’ve encountered thus far in your career?

I did not study economics, finance, or business in college. In fact, I began to invest in the stock market after a Great Uncle left me a small inheritance at the age of 21. I knew communication and journalism, but knew nothing about business. After my father suggested I learn about these new things called “mutual funds,” I began to gather all the magazines and books I could find to learn how the investing world worked. It became the basis of the portfolio I have today. Personally, I would say the biggest challenge was learning the value of having time away from my Blackberry, my computer, and my television. I’ve always been a workaholic, but I am discovering the importance of breaks and People Magazine.

What advice would you give to women who are looking to compete in a male-dominated industry?

There is nothing women cannot accomplish, even if you doubt yourself, and we all do at times. Remember two things: find work that you love and that makes you happy, and pursue that work with everything you’ve got. It doesn’t matter if it’s a job that pays one dollar or a million dollars. My mother taught me that happiness and work are one in the same. We spend more time at work than at home with our families, it should be worth that time no?
