Former Houston Chronicle biz editor dies

June 3, 2010

Tommy Thompson, a former oil reporter and business editor for the Houston Chronicle, died Saturday at the age of 90.

Amanda Casanova of the Chronicle writes, “After covering sports for the now-closed Houston Press, Thompson joined the Chronicle as an oil reporter in 1966. He became the business editor one year later.

“‘Tommy was a versatile editor who worked in everything from sports to business in his career, and he was always good to the people who worked for him,’ said Scott Clark, vice president/editor of chron.com, who was hired by Thompson.

“His skill, professionalism and trustworthiness resulted in many friendships that reached far beyond the workplace, said Tom Stewart, who worked with Thompson during his years in Shell Oil’s communications department.”
