Financial Times plans Chinese biz magazine

Aaron Patrick of The Wall Street Journal writes Tuesday that The Financial Times is planning an upscale business magazine for the Chinese market.

Patrick writes, “News of the magazine was first reported by Reuters, which said it would be called ‘Rui,’ the Chinese word for intelligence.

“A Financial Times spokesman said ‘Rui’ was one option being considered. Pearson is still in negotiations with parties it declined to identify over the launch of the magazine, and the talks could take several weeks to finalize, he said.

“That timing would likely allow the magazine to launch before the Beijing Summer Olympics begin in August.

“China has proved a difficult market for Western media outlets. They risk government censorship and foreign publishers in mainland China have to work with local partners.”
