Fellowships available for business journalism training

October 10, 2008

Fellowships for two weeklong business journalism training seminars Jan. 6 to Jan. 9, 2009, in Phoenix, Ariz., are available from the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism.

The “Strictly Financials Seminar gives seasoned journalists an opportunity for in-depth study of financials and accounting, while the “Business Journalism Professors Seminar is designed to train future business journalism professors. Both feature leading business journalists and educators as presenters.

The application deadline is Nov. 3, 2008, for these programs to be held at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, home of the Reynolds Center.

Each seminar accepts 12 fellows. The fellowships cover hotel, meals, materials and training, valued at $2,000 per person. Fellows will also receive a $500 participation payment, which can be used to help offset travel costs.

The “Strictly Financials Seminar covers the essentials of covering financials, from stock markets and bonds to financial statements and company research. There will also be case studies and group exercises. It is an opportunity for business journalists to learn from experienced instructors and journalism professionals, with follow-up after the seminar ends as well.

The “Business Journalism Professors Seminar will cover the essentials of teaching a hands-on course that includes financial, economic and writing aspects.
