May 19, 2010

Gabriella Stern, the senior editor for global news coverage at Dow Jones Newswires, and Charlie Roth, an assistant managing editor overseeing Dow Jones Newswires’ Latin America coverage, sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:

“We’re pleased to let you know that Matthew Cowley has been named Brazil bureau chief for Dow Jones Newswires. He will succeed Tom Murphy, who will assume a new role in the bureau with the launch of a local-language financial news service focusing on Brazil.

“Matt has been Argentina bureau chief since June 2009. Prior to that he was a special writer in New York, producing the Money Talks column, and before that, reported in the Emerging Markets group. Matt will be returning toward the end of June to Sao Paulo, where he first joined Dow Jones in August 2004. He was born in Venezuela and also lived in Chile and Uruguay. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Liverpool University in economics and Latin American studies.

“Before joining Dow Jones in 2004, Tom oversaw the Portuguese-to-English translation product of Agencia Estado, Brazil’s largest news agency, and periodically penned stories in Portuguese that were published in the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper. A 30-year Brazil veteran, Tom also worked at Knight-Ridder/Bridge, UPI and the AP. Tom is a native of New Jersey and a graduate of Georgetown University.”
