Eric Wieffering, the business editor at the Minneapolis Star Tribune, writes about changes to the newspaper’s business section, including a return of local stocks to the Sunday business section.

Star TribuneThe other changes include “Heard on the Prairie,” a staff-written column that covers issues of Minnesota-based companies, and Juice, a page that will appear in the business section on Friday and examine energy issues.

Wieffering wrote, “Not too long ago, consumers of business news needed their daily paper on Wednesday to tell them what happened to General Mills on Tuesday. The news arrived on the doorstep in the morning, just in time to digest with your Cheerios.

“Today, stock quotes, SEC filings, press releases, blog postings and government reports on inflation and unemployment arrive in a torrent all day, every day.

“Bad news for newspapers? Hardly. If anything, independent, tough-minded business reporting that breaks news, explains what it means and connects it with readers lives is more relevant and necessary than ever.”
