Business journalism is her life. What now?

Marketwatch media columnist Jon Friedman profiles Joanne Kelley, a former Rocky Mountain News business writer who lost her job last week when the paper folded.

She is married to former Denver Post business writer Roger Fillion, who lost his job on Friday.

Friedman writes, “I asked Kelley what kinds of regrets she had.

“‘When the paper closed, I left three good stories on the table,’ she said glumly. ‘A lot of us did.’

“The most disorienting day, predictably, was the last one, on Friday.

“‘What happened on Friday was that we had to work up until deadline, trying to get your clips, moving emails over [to personal files]. We were all scrambling to salvage all the stuff you collect on the company computer.’

“It was a trying time for all kinds of reasons.

“‘People kept coming by just to say how great it was to work with you. I’d say ‘Stop! Stop!’ I was trying to keep myself from dissolving into tears. The paper was going away, and I was losing my career in journalism if I wanted to stay in Colorado.'”
