BusinessWeek eschews photos for artwork

March 12, 2009

Hal Morris, writing on his Grumpy Editor blog, notes that the most recent issue of BusinessWeek is filled with artist renderings of CEOs instead of photos.

Morris writes, “Turn the page and more purple (via a suit) is applied with Burke’s rendition of Daniel R. DiMicco, chairman and CEO of Nucor Corp., while David B. Snow Jr., chairman and CEO of Medco Health Solutions, Inc., receives an artist-applied deep blue suit and crimson tie (that matches his lips).

“Art of the duo takes up the equivalent of three quarters of a page.

“The illustration on the following page with ‘Tug-of-War Over Cap and Trade’ features the artist’s depiction of James E. Rogers, chairman and CEO of Duke Energy Corp.  His suit is highlighted with shades of blue, purple and gray, while a tie is fuchsia.  That, too, is spread over the equivalent of three-quarters of a page.

“The art certainly injects an abundance of multi-colors into a business magazine – sort of like daffodils, pansies and snapdragons popping up as spring approaches.”
